Items in competitive Pokémon

The purpose of this page is to list the most used items in competitive Pokémon, ranked by generations. You could potentially see some Pokémon holding other items, but overall, the vast majority of teams will be using items that are listed below. Unless it is specificly mentionned, items introduced in a given generation are usable in the following ones.

First generation

Pokémon cannot hold items in this generation.

Second generation

Leftovers

Leftovers - The holder recovers 6,25% of its max HP at the end of each turn.


Thick Club

Thick Club - Doubles Cubone and Marrowak's Attack stat.


Items that are boosting moves of a given type by 10% are also introduced in gen 2, such as Black Glasses for the Dark type, Soft Sand for the Ground type or Magnet for the Electrik type. Each type has a specific item. From generation 4 onward, power is boosted by 20% (thus, the effect is the same as Plates). Far from being used a lot, those items are still used occasionnally.

Third generation

Choice Band

Choix Band - Boosts the holder's Attack stat by 50% but prevents it from changing moves until it leaves the field.


Mental Herb

Mental Herb - Cures the holder of the effect of Attract. From generation 5 onward, also cures it of the effects of Cursed Body, Encore, Disable, Taunt, and Torment. Single use.


White Herb

White Herb - Resets the holder's stats stages if they are lowered, whether by a move like Shell Smash or by an ability like Intimidate. Single use.


Soul Dew

Soul Dew - Boosts Latios and Latias' Special Attack and Special Defense stats by 50%. From generation 7 onward, only boosts Latios and Latias' Dragon and Psychic-type moves by 20%.


Bracelet Macho

Macho Brace - Halves the holder's Speed stat.

Berries are also introduced in generation 3. A big part of them doesn't have any specific effect in battles. Therefore, only a few are used in competitive Pokémon (single use) :

Lum Berry

Lum Berry - Cures the holder of any status condition.


Salac Berry

Salac Berry - Boosts the holder's Speed stat by 1 stage when it has 1/4 of its max HP or less.


Petaya Berry

Petaya Berry - Boosts the holder's Special Attack stat by 1 stage when it has 1/4 of its max HP or less.


Liechi Berry

Liechi Berry - Boosts the holder's Attack stat by 1 stage when it has 1/4 of its max HP or less.


Sitrus Berry

Sitrus Berry - Restores 30 HP when the holder has 1/2 of its max HP or less. From generation 4 onward, restores 1/4 of its max HP.


Chesto Berry

Chesto Berry - Cures the holder of sleep (only used on Pokémon with the move Rest).


Leppa Berry

Leppa Berry - Restores 10 PP of the first move reaching 0 PP.


The following Berries restore 1/8 of the holder's max HP when it has 1/2 of its max HP or less. They are only used in generation 7 because they restore 1/2 of the holder's max HP when it has 1/4 of its max HP or less. As of generation 8, they only restore 1/3 :

Figy Berry

Figy Berry - Confuses the holder if it has a negative nature in Attack.


Wiki Berry

Wiki Berry - Confuses the holder if it has a negative nature in Special Attack.


Mago Berry

Mago Berry - Confuses the holder if it has a negative nature in Speed.


Aquav Berry

Aquav Berry - Confuses the holder if it has a negative nature in Special Defense.


Iapapa Berry

Iapapa Berry - Confuses the holder if it has a negative nature in Defense.

Fourth generation

Focus Sash

Focus Sash - The user survives any hit with at least 1 HP if it is at full HP before being attacked. Single use. Same effect as the one of the ability Sturdy.


Choice Scarf

Choice Scarf - Boosts the holder's Speed stat by 50% but prevents it from changing moves until it leaves the field.


Choice Specs

Choice Specs - Boosts the holder's Special Attack stat by 50% but prevents it from changing moves until it leaves the field.


Life Orb

Life Orb - Boosts the power of every holder's move by 30%, but the holder receives 10% damage for each successful attack.


Power Herb

Power Herb - Allows the holder to use a move that normally requires a charge turn (like Solar Beam) in only one turn. Single use.


Expert Belt

Expert Belt - Super effective attacks are boosted by 20%.


Black Sludge

Black Sludge - The holder recovers 6,25% of its max HP at the end of each turn if it is a Poison-type Pokémon. If not, it loses 12,5% instead.


Toxic Orb

Toxic Orb - Badly poisons the holder at the end of its first turn on the field. Used in conjunction with the abilities Poison Heal or Guts.


Flame Orb

Flame Orb - Burns the holder at the end of its first turn on the field. Used in conjunction with the move Facade or with the ability Guts.


Light Clay

Light Clay - Light Screen and Reflect effects last 8 turns instead of 5 if used by the holder. Also works with Aurora Veil from generation 7 onward.


Smooth Rock

Smooth Rock - If the holder uses Sandstorm or has the ability Sand Stream, sandstorm effect lasts 8 turns instead of 5.


Damp Rock

Damp Rock - If the holder uses Rain Dance or has the ability Drizzle, rain effect lasts 8 turns instead of 5.


Heat Rock

Heat Rock - If the holder uses Sunny Day or has the ability Drought, harsh sunlight effect lasts 8 turns instead of 5.


Icy Rock

Icy Rock - If the holder uses Hail or has the ability Snow Warning, hail effect lasts 8 turns instead of 5.


Metronome

Metronome - Boosts the power of a move used consecutively by 10% at each use, 20% from generation 5 onward (max 100%). The boosts are reseted if the move fails, if the target protected itself (with Protect, Baneful Bunker etc.) or if it is immune to it.


Shed Shell

Shed Shell - The holder can switch out, even if an ability (Arena Trap, Magnet Pull) or a move (Magma Storm, Whirlpool...) is supposed to prevent it from leaving the field.


Sticky Barb

Sticky Barb - The holder loses 1/8 of its max HP at the end of each turn. If a Pokémon without item is using a contact move against a Sticky Barb holder, Sticky Barb is transfered to this Pokémon.


Iron Ball

Iron Ball - Halves the holder's Speed stat and makes it sensitive to Ground-type moves (loss of Flying type and of the ability Levitate + sensitivity to Entry Hazards like Spikes, Toxic Spikes and Sticky Web).


Wide Lens

Wide Lens - Boosts the accuracy of the holder's moves by 10%.


Custap Berry

Custap Berry - Allows the holder to move first when it has 1/4 of its max HP or less. Single use.


New Berries that halves super effective damage of each type are introduced in this generation. The following ones are the most used in competitive Pokémon (single use) :

Shuca Berry

Shuca Berry - Halves the damage of a super effective Ground-type attack.


Occa Berry

Occa Berry - Halves the damage of a super effective Fire-type attack.


Colbur Berry

Colbur Berry - Halves the damage of a super effective Dark-type attack.


Chople Berry

Chople Berry - Halves the damage of a super effective Fighting-type attack.


Passho Berry

Passho Berry - Halves the damage of a super effective Water-type attack.


Yache Berry

Yache Berry - Halves the damage of a super effective Ice-type attack.


Wacan Berry

Wacan Berry - Halves the damage of a super effective Electrik-type attack.


Iapapa Berry

Iapapa Berry - Halves the damage of a super effective Psychic-type attack.


Plates are also introduced in generation 4. Each type has its Plate, except the Normal type. They boost the power of each said type by 20%.

Fifth generation

Rocky Helmet

Rocky Helmet - If the holder is hit by a move that makes contact, the target loses 1/6 of its max HP.


Eviolite

Eviolite - If the holder is not fully evolved, boosts its Defense and Special Defense stats by 50%.


Air Balloon

Air Balloon - The holder is immune to Ground-type moves. The effect is lost if the holder is hit by an offensive move, whether it makes contact or not.


Red Card

Red Card - If the holder survives a hit, the target is forced to switch out. Single use.


Eject Button

Eject Button - If the holder is hit by a move, it is forced to switch out. Single use.

Gems are also introduced in this generation. Each type has its Gem, except the Fairy type. Gems Boost the power of the related type's move by 50%, single use. Except for the Normal Gem, they are not available from generation 6 onward.

Sixth generation

Méga-Gemme

Mega Stone - Allows the holder to Mega-Evolve. Do not exist anymore from generation 8 onward.


Assault Vest

Assault Vest - Boosts the holder's Special Defense stat by 50% but prevents it from using non-offensive moves.


Weakness Policy

Weakness Policy - Boosts the holder's Attack and Special Attack stats by 2 stages if hit by a super effective attack.


Plaque Pixie

Pixie Plate - Boosts the power of Fairy-type moves by 20%.

Seventh generation

Terrain Extender

Terrain Extender - If the holder creates a terrain, whether it is with a move or an ability, the effect last 8 turns instead of 5.


Cristal Z

Z-Crystal - Allows the holder to use a Z-Move. Each type has its Z-Crystal and some Z-Crystal can only be used by specific Pokémon (for example, Mewnium Z for Mew, Kommonium Z for Kommo-o). Single use. Do not exist anymore from generation 8 onward.


The Seeds boost either the holder's Defense or Special Defense stat accordingly to the Terrain in effect (single use) :

Misty Seed

Misty Seed - Boost the holder's Special Defense if Misty Terrain is active.


Electric Seed

Electric Seed - Boost the holder's Defense if Electrik Terrain is active.


Grassy Seed

Grassy Seed - Boost the holder's Defense if Grassy Terrain is active.


Psychic Seed

Psychic Seed - Boost the holder's Special Defense if Psychic Terrain is active.

Eighth generation

Heavy-Duty Boots

Heavy Duty Boots - The holder is not affected by the effects of Entry Hazards : Stealth Rock, Spikes, Toxic Spikes and Sticky Web.


Protective Pads

Protective Pads - Protects the holder of potential effects that are due to using contact moves on the target. Therefore, it won't take the Rocky Helmet, Rough Skin or Iron Barbs damage and will never be paralysed or burned by the abilities Static and Flame Body.


Throat Spray

Throat Spray - Boosts the holder's Special Attack stat by 1 stage after it has used a sound-based move (Bug Buzz, Hypervoice, Overdrive, Clanging Scales...). Single use.

Ninth generation

Booster Energy

Energy Booster - Triggers the holder's abilitiy Protosynthesis or Quark Drive, boosting its highest stat by 30% (50% in the case of Speed). Single use.


Loaded Dice

Loaded Dice - Allows the holder to hit at least 4 times with multi-strike moves like Bullet Seed or Icicle Spear.


Covert Cloak

Covert Cloak - Protects the holder from the moves' secondary effects. Therefore, a Pokémon hit by Fake Out won't be made flinched, won't be frozen by Ice Beam, burned by Scald or paralysed by Thunderbolt.
